Norah Jones, John Zorn & friends raise over $25,000 for Japan

The Abrons Arts Centre’s Facebook Page reports that the recent April 8th New York concerts organized by John Zorn raised over $25,000 for Japan!

Two shows, one at 6:30 and one at 9:30 featured first (early show): Thurston Moore, Matthew Shipp, Gyan Riley, Masada String Trio, Ned Rothenberg and ten equally entertaining performers.  The later venue showcased Grammy award winner Norah Jones,  Jesse Harris, Vinicius Cantuaria, Buke and Gass, JG Thirlwell’s Manorexia, Elusian Fields and Sex Mob

The artists donated their time, and the resulting funds were donated to the Japan Society Earthquake Relief Fund

The Abron Facebook entry says:   “Thank you to everyone who came out last Friday for our two benefit concerts, and a big thanks to John Zorn and all the musicians and crew who volunteered their time. We raised over $25,000 for the Japan Society Earthquake Relief Fund. Please continue to give.”

And then on Saturday, a thirteen hour concert  was held at the Japan Society featuring John Zorn with his sometimes melancholic, sometimes angry saxophone.  Other of the many, many talented artists included: Laurie Anderson, Philip Glass, Hal Willner and Lou Reed.  There was food, emotion, Bach, folk, rock, pop, Japanese traditional instruments and art, all mixed into a 1980’s ‘feelin’ good’ kind of day.  The New York Times’ Review captured the atmosphere – it was a day not soon to be forgotten.

John Zorn was the organizer of these concerts – a tireless, talented man with a huge heart.  Funds raised from the concerts have been donated to the Japan Society Earthquake Relief Fund

Thank you John Zorn for your vision and work for Japan.

For fans who wish to donate, as you can tell from the above story, the Japan Society’s Earthquake Relief Fund has been chosen by many celebrities for assistance to Japan.
